A board-certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The Physiatrist will provide your child’s medical management, including the prescription of therapeutic interventions and assistive devices.
- Nurse Practitioner

A board-certified, master-level prepared nurse, who in conjunction with the physiatrist, oversees the clinical management of patients and the rehabilitation unit.
- Primary Nurse

A registered nurse who, through direct care and supervision of other nursing staff, ensures consistent care specific to your child’s needs by managing nursing regimens and daily care programs within the unit.
- Case Manager

A registered nurse who coordinates care from referral to discharge. The case manager will assist in ensuring a smooth transition from acute care, to rehab and then home, providing assistance to your family for any home health or discharge needs, and coordinating benefits with your insurance company.
- Social Worker

Assists your family with admission and discharge processes, providing facility information, and connecting your family to resources needed for transition to home and community re-entry.
- Physical Therapist (PT)

Performs an evaluation and implements an individualized treatment plan focused on maximizing strength and mobility leading to greater physical independence; may also assess the need for assistive devices and adaptive equipment.
- Occupational Therapist (OT)

Performs assessment and implements individualized treatment to improve upper extremity fine motor and visual motor function promoting independence in self-care and activities of daily living; may also assess the need for assistive devices and adaptive equipment.
- Speech-Language Pathologist

Focus on re-establishing the patient's ability to communicate functionally with others; improving cognitive skills including memory, attention, problem solving, reasoning, thought organization, and orientation; and re-establishing the skills necessary for safe and functional swallowing. Treatment may also involve the use of compensatory strategies to communicate and/or the use of augmentative and/or alternative communication (AAC).
- Registered Dietitian

Completes a nutritional assessment for each child to determine specific needs.
- Public Education Liaison

Works directly with, and provides information/training to your family and your child’s school to prepare for your child’s transition back to school, serving as the facilitator between your child’s medical team and the public school staff.
- Education Teacher

Evaluates and assesses your child’s educational needs, determining the appropriate educational setting, and keeping patient on target with schoolwork, when possible.
- Therapeutic Recreation (TR)

Performs an evaluation and implements a treatment plan which uses your child’s leisure skills and interests as a way to address physical, cognitive, social, and/or emotional deficits or impairments. Community outings are planned on a weekly basis to help your child and your family use skills you have acquired during your inpatient stay in a “real life” setting.
- Music Therapist

Performs an evaluation and implements a treatment plan which addresses social functioning, gross and fine motor coordination, cognitive skills, vocal abilities, and breath support through musical responses. Music Therapy may act as an adjunct therapy with O.T., P.T., Speech, and Education.
- Licensed Professional Counselor

Provides counseling, support services, and recommendations to your child and your family to address cognitive, behavioral, and emotional reactions to illness/injury, hospitalizations, and recovery.
- Licensed Child Psychologist

Works with the counselor and rehabilitation team and, at times, directly with you and your child, to provide consultation or formal evaluations of patient’s emotional and behavioral needs. The psychologist’s goal is to help your child and the rehabilitation team to work effectively together during treatment at The Children’s Center.
- Respiratory Therapist

Performs assessment and implements an individualized treatment plan to improve ventilation and oxygenation, working closely with physicians to use the appropriate medications and equipment for effective airway clearance.
