The Children’s Center is proud to announce Rachel Nowels, Board Certified Music Therapist at The Children’s Center, has been awarded the Harmony Award by the Southwestern Region of the American Music Therapy Association. The award honors members who have made outstanding and significant contributions to the profession in the areas of education, clinical practice, research, and/or service.
The Association is made up of members from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Members are asked to nominate their peers for the award. They must collect letters from other music therapists in the region supporting the nomination as well as supporting documentation.
Rachel says she didn’t know she was nominated and was quite surprised to find out she had won the award. “I am humbled to receive this award from my fellow music therapists. It means a great deal to know that I have the respect of my colleagues.”
Most of the patients at The Children’s Center work with the music therapy staff during group and one-on-one therapy sessions. They incorporate instruments such as drums, guitars, and pianos into the rehabilitation process.
“It has been a blessing to watch the music therapy program at The Children’s Center grow over the past 8 years,” says Rachel. “Our success is based on a team effort of support from all of the different departments here. That’s what I love about working at The Children’s Center. Everyone works together for the good of our patients.”
